Carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic polycyclic hydrocarbons in Neurospora crassa and Chinese hamster cells: their photodynamic effects.

چکیده
The photodynamic effect of polycyclic hydrocarbons was studied in Neurospora crassa and tissue culture cells of the Chinese hamster. The polycyclic hydrocarbons were dissolved in dimethylformamide and added to the treatment solution or medium. Other solvents, such as dimethyl sulfoxide and bovine serum, quenched the photodynamic effect of 3,4-benzpyrene and could not be used. Conidia from a dikaryon of Neurospora were used in the experiments. The carcinogenic activity of the poly cyclic hydrocarbons was expressed by Iball's index. The

Transplacental effect of some chemical compounds on organ cultures of embryonic kidney tissue.
Fragments of embryonic kidney were explanted in organ culture. The embryos were obtained from mice that, during the last third of their pregnancies, received the polycyclic hydrocarbons 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (carcinogenic), benz(a)pyrene (carcinogenic), and their analogs anthracene (noncarcinogenic) and pyrene (noncarcinogenic); the carcinogenic cyclic amines, o-tolidine and 3,3'-dichl...
متن کاملPhotodynamic Toxicity of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Tissue Culture.
SUMMARY Cells grown in culture were exposed to benzo[a}pyrene and related polycyclic aro matic hydrocarbons dissolved in serum, following which procedure they were irradi ated with long-wave ultraviolet light. The sequence of biological responses resulting from this photodynamic effect on the cells was dependent upon the total energy ab sorbed by the hydrocarbons incorporated in the cells. The ...
متن کاملMutagenesis in Chinese hamster cells by cyclopenta(a)phenanthrenes activated by a human hepatoma cell line.
The cyclopenta(a)phenanthrene, 15,16-dihydro-11-methyl-cyclopenta(a)phenanthren-17-one, had potent mutagenic activity in cell-mediated mutation assays with V79 Chinese hamster cells as targets, and cells of the human hepatoma line HepG2 as mediators of activation. The compound was inactive when low-passage hamster embryo cells were used as activators. When the mutagenic activity of a series of ...
متن کاملInteraction of carcinogenic hydrocarbons with tissues. VIII. Binding of tritiumlabeled hydrocarbons to the soluble proteins of mouse skin.
Studies were carried out in which the binding of thirteen carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic hydrocarbons to the soluble proteins of mouse skin was compared. A good quantitative correlation was found to exist between the binding of the hydrocarbons to a particular protein fraction (protein fraction 1) obtained from mouse skin, which migrates toward the cathode with a relative mobility of +0.23, i...
متن کاملThe Effect of Single Intraperitoneal Injections of Certain Carcinogenic and Non-carcinogenic Hydrocarbons on the Growth of the Rat *
During the course of a study of the effect of the oral administration of certain polycydic hydrocarbons on the growth of the rat,7 a paper by Haddow, Scott, and Scott2 appeared which reported that growth retardation had been produced in the rat by a single intraperitoneal injection of certain carcinogenic hydrocarbons. These authors further observed that similar injections of non-carcinogenic c...
